500 New Web Fonts Available

Friday, July 8th, 2011

This week 500 extra web fonts became available for web developers to use on their websites. By using CSS, developers can use the fonts that Monotype Imaging announced today along with a partnership with Acquia’s Drupal Gardens theme portal.

The business with Drupal Gardens allows those publishing on the site to use Monotype’s web font service. CSS enables developers to make use of downloadable fonts on their websites. Before the use of CSS and downloadable fonts, visitors had to previously have those fonts on their computer in order to see them on a website.

Many developers resorted to the use of images since it wasn’t probable to use fonts that were outside the scope of those normally installed on a typical computer. By using downloadable fonts, developers are able to cut down on server requests, save download time and boost page loading speeds.

2. Windows Type 1 fonts have two files: PFB (printer font binary has outlines that control how the font looks) and PFM (printer font metrics has information about font spacing). Be sure you have both font files.

3. If you currently have or previously had Adobe Type Manager Deluxe 4.0, 4.1, or 4.1.1 installed you may need the Adobe Deluxe Updater in order to properly use your Type 1 fonts under Windows 2000/XP. Get it from Adobe.
