Glossary G

Glyph:

Glyph is the form of a written character. For example, a roman 'a', an italic 'a' and a little caps 'a' are three different glyphs representing the same character.

Golden Section:

Harmonious page proportions. When a line is separated into two imbalanced sections such that the fraction of the lesser section to the larger is around equivalent to the portion of the larger section to the whole. When the sides of a rectangle, such as a sheet, have such as a proportions, it is called a golden rectangle. The dimensions for such pages are often 3:5 or 5:8.

Grotesque:

Grotesque is a european term for Sans Serif type styles. This is referred to by Americans as 'gothic'. In England the short form, grot, is often used.
